HOW THE DICTIONARY WORKS

READ EACH SENSE SEPARATELY

Enter one complete English word. CHEATY returns the available WordNet senses as separate entries rather than forcing several meanings into one paragraph. Each entry names its part of speech and gives a definition. A usage example and synonyms appear only when the source supplies them, so their absence does not mean the definition is incomplete.

BANK shows why separate senses matter: it can describe a financial institution, a building used for banking, a container for saving coins, sloping land beside a body of water or the lateral tilt of an aircraft, among other meanings. Read beyond the first result whenever a word has more than one possible use.

MATCH MEANING TO CONTEXT

Start with the sentence around the word. Identify the job it performs: is it naming something, describing something or expressing an action? Use the displayed part of speech to discard senses that cannot fit. Then substitute the short definition into the sentence. The best sense should preserve the sentence’s meaning without forcing an unrelated topic.

Examples and synonyms are checks, not automatic replacements. For BRIGHT, “a bright future” matches the hopeful or promising sense, while “a bright room” matches the sense of having plenty of light. The surrounding noun changes which definition is appropriate even though the spelling stays the same.

TRY THE COMPLETE WORD FIRST

Search the word as it appears. The lookup handles common English inflections using WordNet’s standard morphology rules, so forms such as PLAYED, HOUSES and RUNNING may resolve to their base entries. This is useful for reading, but it is not a spelling corrector: a typo, a newly coined term or an unsupported form can still produce no definition. If that happens, verify the spelling and try the base form yourself.

SOURCE AND LIMITS

English definitions come from the locally stored Princeton WordNet 3.1 lexical dataset. It is strong at grouping words by meaning and grammatical role, but it does not supply pronunciation or word origins here. Coverage can also miss proper names, recent slang, specialist terms and some inflected forms. A definition lookup does not decide whether a word is accepted in a particular game.
